Top Five Uses For A Multimeter

1. Test A Car Battery

There are various ways to test car battery. The battery should be tested in order to know whether a new battery is required or an alternator. One of the ways to check the car battery is to check with the help of a multimeter. One can get cheap and affordable multimeters in the market for their car. First of all, set the multimeter to 20 DC Volts. Then touch the negative battery terminal (black) with the negative meter probe (black). Then you will need to touch the positive battery terminal (red) with the positive meter probe (red). Turn on the headlights to provide the car battery with load. Check the reading. Reading with 12.5 or higher means battery has got good charge. 12.3 means that the battery is 75% charged. 11.8 and lower means the battery has 25% charge.

2. Test And Alternator

It is quite easy to measure the test a car alternator. One will need any good quality automotive multimeters. The hood should be opened and then access the car battery. Then you will need to locate the alternator and then make sure that the alternator belt is not loose. Turn on the multimeter and then set the reading to 20V. Start the car engine and make sure that the belt is rotating properly. Then you will need to place the red positive multimeter probe to red terminal connector of the alternator. Then take the negative black multimeter probe and touch it to the metal part of the car. Do not ground the alternator. The reading should be around 14 Volts.

3. Measure Current

To measure the current, you will need any good multimeters and there are many cheap and affordable multimeters that you can get. You will need to turn the meter on. Then you will need to insert the probes into the right connections. Set the main selector switch on the meter and then switch to the current measurement type and the range for the measurement that you want to take. The maximum range should be above the expected reading. When taking the measurement, you will need to optimize the range. Place the probes into the voltage measurement socket and turn the range to the maximum voltage. Take the reading.

4. Perform A Continuity Test

To perform the continuity test, you will need to use any best HVAC multimeters. First of all, you will need to turn the dial to continuity test mode and if necessary, you can also press the continuity button. Insert the black test lead inside the COM jack. Then you will need to insert the red lead into the V jack. After doing this, you will need to remove the leads in reverse order. The circuit will get de-energized and you will need to connect the test leads across the component which is being tested. If the complete path is detected, the meter will make a beeping noise. If the circuit is open, it will not beep. Then turn off the multimeter.

5. Voltage check

To check the voltage, you will need any cheap and affordable multimeters. You will need to make sure that it is working perfectly. To measure the AC voltage, you will need to turn the dial to V. You will need to set the range to the highest voltage setting if the voltage of the circuit is unknown. Insert the black lead into the COM jack. Insert the red lead into the V jack. After finished, remove the lead in reverse order. Connect the test leads to the circuit with black first and then red. Do not touch the lead tips. Read the measurements. Remove the leads afterwards carefully.
